More and more people seem to be feeling drawn towards a spiritual path. Individuals are feeling disconnected from the material world and are asking questions focused on purpose of life, instead of carrying on with mundane daily activities. Though some are naturally drawn to this path, many are taking this road to follow a trend. Spirituality appears to be carrying a symbol of its own and has a great significance on social media sites from pilgrimage journeys to living consciously.
The true definition of spirituality is a way of living that cultivates inner peace and lasting happiness. This state of mind is our true self, and it should remain unaffected no matter the life situation. So, what makes the spiritual transition difficult, if it is our essence? Walking this path should be a familiar road yet it feels challenging.
This is because spirituality has dual sides, let's call it a positive and a negative side for the purpose of this article. Each side must be experienced before a neutral state is reached. For example, Giving vs Receiving, Giving is usually considered as a positive attribute, it is a symbol for generosity, service, and being open hearted. Receiving on the other hand is considered as a negative side because it implies dependency and selfishness. However, an excess of either side can be detrimental, giving too much can lead to burn out followed by resentment and receiving too much can lead to entitlement and passivity. Therefore, a balance is vital, learning to give with fullness and receiving with gratitude and worthiness. For a soul, both sides need to be experienced and learned for a life lesson to be completed.
There is a presumption that to live life spiritually, a certain way of living must be followed. Therefore, most individuals force a way of living, which they consider it as “right”. It is this forced way that makes the spiritual transition difficult as it may pull away an individual from their life lessons, which in result either acerbates the existing life patterns or reintroduces new patterns. A spiritual transition requires a balanced and a neutral state with any life lessons and its learning.
Challenge is also felt when there is continued effort towards only one side of the polarity and the other side is ignored, or either side is strengthened to a level where a strong subconscious tendency and an intuition is developed through repeated actions, leaving little room for the opposite side. These are reflected in life patterns and its associated loops such as emotions, behaviour and habits.
Spiritual transitions can have potential to create two pattern loops, a Spiritual Alignment – positive pattern loop which is focused on strengthening a spiritual way of living such as meditation, being in the present moment and being aware. The Spiritual Avoidance- negative pattern loop which is created when a forced way of living is incorporated due to limited knowledge on personal patterns.
Spiritual Alignment - Positive Pattern Loop
Being spiritual introduces a positive way of living through conscious actions. The first step towards it is usually meditation. By creating a routine of meditating every day, it allows individual to create a space to go within and be grounded. Over time consistency develops, and routine becomes a habit, which strengthen the meditation type and its duration. At this stage there is often loss of sense of time, a 30-minute mediation can feel as short as 5-minute or vice versa.
Awareness increases through this and individuals are present more in the “NOW”. Additionally, it creates mind space by decluttering it from past events or potential future events and outcomes. There is an increase in self-trust and feeling of alignment in life. Overall, more clarity and stronger intuition.
This positive pattern loop of meditation doesn’t just rewire the subconscious tendencies and intuition, but it also opens a gateway to spiritual intuition through which guidance can be received from the universe.

Over time the cycle becomes a strength. The memory of meditation gets stored as data within the subconscious mind, which turns into knowledge that gets carried over from one lifetime to another.

Spiritual Avoidance - Negative Pattern Loop
A life lesson is decided before a soul descends to experience it. Most life events and experiences are shaped around a life theme. The aim of life is to recognise the repeated patterns and the life theme and make a conscious action to accept the lesson, and integrate it into daily lives for the life learning to be fully complete.
Negative pattern loops are created when there is spiritual avoidance, a belief towards right way of living can end up interfering with the actual life lesson. For example, a life theme of surrender (i.e., trust, faith, letting go) translates into a life lesson of experiencing ambition (initiative, drives and goal). Now, if an individual continues to live a surrendered life, they may not learn their lesson of aspirations. Surrender is often considered as a "right" way of spiritual living, therefore individuals who are transitioning will consciously choose to embed it in life, causing a block from moving onto learning their life lesson. This causes an individual to disconnect from their soul learning.
There will be limited attempt to change and when pushed in that direction, dispassionate will be strengthened. As a result, this will make the subconscious tendencies and intuition stronger. In future, it will be hard for it to be overcome, possibly creating new pattern loops to act as a coping mechanism.

When a learning becomes essential for growth, resisting it often intensifies the pattern, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction. The more we try to preserve the familiar, the more challenging the experiences can become. A change would require tremendous effort to overcome it.
Transitioning into spirituality is not about “right” way of living, it is about being conscious, aware and focused on personal life lessons. It is essential to understand and be aware of the existing life patterns before a way of living is integrated.
